What exactly is Mindfulness?

Think of mindfulness as the art of being wholly engaged in the here and now. It's about tuning into your senses, noticing the world around you, and really listening to what your body and mind are telling you.

It's like watching a curious cat 🐱 - observing everything with an open mind, not passing judgment. She's simply present, living in the moment.

Mindfulness invites you to adopt this same approach. It doesn't require any special equipment - just your full attention and a readiness to witness your thoughts and emotions as they unfold in real time.

Mindfulness vs Meditation

Many people use these terms interchangeably so I wanted to clarify the difference. While they are similar, mindfulness is only one aspect of meditation. While mindfulness is the practice of being present in the moment, meditation is a broader form of practice that may include visualization, spoken mantras, or breathing exercises. 

Both practices have a similar effect of relieving stress  and increasing awareness but they are slightly different. 


How to start a Mindfulness Practice

If you’re anything like I was last year, you have absolutely no time to add anything else in your schedule. Before I moved I was working 3 jobs, taking care of a sick cat, trying to move to a new state, and owned a small business.

There was absolutely no extra time but I had to do something to keep from going insane. The key, I found, is to fit it in where you can. Even if its only 60 seconds at a time. 

One way to bring mindfulness into your life is to focus on your breathing. You can do this in the shower, on your commute to work (just make sure you’re paying attention to your surroundings too), or even while taking a quick bathroom break–I told you you have to fit it in where you can!

Another way is to start mindful eating. Instead of scrolling through your phone or making phone calls while you’re eating lunch, try focusing solely on the texture and taste of your food or the movements of your facial muscles as you chew.

Lastly, (this one’s my personal favorite) take the time between your first alarm and the one after you hit snooze or even right beforoe you go to bed to just focus on your breathing. Do a couple stretches in bed and focus on how your body feels.

Benefits of Mindfulness

Mindfulness can have numerous benefits for both your physical and mental health. Practicing mindfuless allows you to develop a deeper sense of self awareness, enabling you to be better in touch with your thoughts and emotions. This can help manage stress, anger, and other negative states of mind. 

It can also help improve focus and concentration as it involves training your attention to stay in the present moment. This, in turn, can help improve productivity. 

Mindfulness techniques, such as deep breathing and body scanning can induce a relaxation response in the body making it easier to fall asleep quickly. 

Grounding yourself in the present and letting go of past and future stressors can improve your sense of wellbeing by cultivating a sense of contentment and gratitude for the present. 

By practicing a non-reactive and non-judgemental mindset, you can enhance your resilience in the face of challenges and setbacks. Cultivate your inner strength to nounce back from adversity and maintain a positive outlook. 

Mindfulness is a simple yet powerful approach to finding inner peace and reducing stress. It requires no special equipment and can be practiced by anyone. Whether you're looking to improve your physical health, reduce stress or improve your mental clarity, mindfulness practice can help you achieve your goals. Remember, it's all about being present and accepting your thoughts and feelings without judgment.
